LG to sell new flagship G4 phone starting April 29

Correction, 4:35 a.m. PT April 21: The launch date of the phone has been fixed. It will go on sale on April 29 in South Korea.

LG’s successor to the G3, which is shown here, will go on sale April 29.
Josh Miller/CNET

LG’s new G4 phone will reach consumers on April 29 — at least those in South Korea, the company told CNET.

LG touted the new phone and a special promotion via a Korean blog posted on Monday. The blog didn’t reveal when the phone will hit retailers in other countries. LG told CNET that other markets will announce their respective rollout dates after April 28, the same date the company will hold a launch event for the new phone.

Last year, LG kicked off its G3 initially in South Korea and then later introduced it to other regions.

To entice customers, LG is offering a couple of freebies. Buyers of the G4 will get a free screen replacement. If your screen breaks within the first year of ownership, LG will replace it at no charge. Further, buyers will get a free 64GB microSD card. However, both freebies are good only for consumers in South Korea, LG told CNET. Both promotions end May 31.

LG is counting on the G4 to continue and expand upon the strides made by the G3.

In a mobile landscape dominated by Apple and Samsung, LG fared relatively well with the G3, which launched last year. The company saw its highest ever market share in North America during 2014’s third quarter. Over the same period, LG took fourth place in worldwide mobile phone sales with a share of 4.2 percent, according to a report from Gartner. However, looking solely at smartphone sales, LG trailed Chinese vendors such as Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo. So the company still has work to do.

LG hasn’t spilled too many details about the G4. But the new blog post touts the phone’s “DSLR camera performance” with a 16-megapixel rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. Reports say that the G4 will sport a 5.5-inch screen with a Quad-HD (2,560×1,440-pixel) LCD display and that the new screen will be 30 percent brighter than conventional QHD LCD displays. Purportedly powered by a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 or 808 processor, the phone will come with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage and a more responsive touchscreen.

The company is scheduled to unveil the G4 on April 28 and April 29 at events in six cities: New York, London, Paris, Istanbul, Singapore and Seoul.

The 7th Guest: Remastered comes to Android

the-7th-guest-remastered-staircase.jpg
Climb that famous staircase once again…
MojoTouch

Want to feel old? Classic PC puzzle game The 7th Guest recently turned 20. And by “recently” I mean in 2013; it’ll actually celebrate its 22nd birthday this year.

Of course, old games never die — they just get ported to new platforms. To wit: Trilobyte and MojoTouch just released The 7th Guest: Remastered for Android. Although the math is a bit off, they’re calling this a 20th Anniversary Edition.

In case you’re not old enough to remember it (or even know it existed), The 7th Guest was a landmark game for many reasons. For starters, it was one of the first games ever to be released on CD-ROM, and–

Hang on. A CD-ROM is a small, shiny disc that was once used to distribute software (and hold music, but that’s a different history lesson). Before that, software came on–

Hang on. Software is what we now refer to as apps, and it used to require a computer. Wow, I am so old.

the-7th-guest-remastered-room.jpgthe-7th-guest-remastered-room.jpg
Visually, The 7th Guest may be a bit long in the tooth, but the puzzles are still devilish.
MojoTouch

Anyway, The 7th Guest came on a CD (two of them, actually), which probably drove a lot of people to buy new computers that had CD-ROM drives — because the game was also notable for its then-amazing 3D-rendered graphics and integrated live-action video clips. (Yeah, we used to be really easily impressed.)

But the real draw was the puzzles: The 7th Guest was a stumper, a plot-driven collection of clues and logic puzzles that drove many a player insane (or at least online in search of a walkthrough).

So, what’s “remastered” about this version? It features a new, touchscreen-oriented control system, new icons and animations, a map you can access during the game, upscaled HD graphics, your choice of four music options and a boatload of extras: a making-of featurette, a 7th Guest novelization, and so on. It’s the kind of stuff you’d expect to find on a movie DVD–

Hang on. A DVD is a small, shiny disc that was once used to distribute movies and… Oh, never mind.

The 7th Guest: Remastered for Android is available from the Amazon Appstore and Google Play store. It’s currently priced at $5.99.

LG to launch new flagship G4 phone on May 31

Stream PC games to your Android device with Remotr

remotr-game-select.jpg
You can stream nearly any game from your PC to your Android device — provided you can master the controls.
Screenshot by Rick Broida/CNET

The concept of streaming games to a mobile device is nothing new. Nvidia’s Grid service, for example, allows players to access PC games via the company’s Shield console and tablet, while Limelight Game Streaming opens the door to Android devices — provided you have an Nvidia GameStream-compatible PC.

Remotr opens the door even further, letting you play just about any PC game on just about any Android device. It’s free, and it works — but with some caveats.

The service consists of a Windows client and Android app (with an iPhone version in the works). I tested it using a reasonably powerful Core i7 system and Google Nexus 7 tablet.

What Remotr does, in a nutshell, is mirror your PC’s screen to the mobile device, while the app provides a front-end interface for choosing the game you want to play.

Just as important, it supplies onscreen controls to take the place of whatever controller, keyboard and/or mouse setup you use on your PC.

To get started, you simply download and install the Windows client (which is compatible with Windows 7 and later), then install Remotr on your Android device. You’ll need to create an account, then sign into it with both tools. That’s how Remotr is able to stream not just over local Wi-Fi networks, but also over data ones.

With those steps done, you should see your PC listed within the app. Tap it to bring up a nicely tiled selection of the games you have installed, then tap any one of them to run it.

remotr-on-tablet.jpgremotr-on-tablet.jpg

RemoteMyApp

And that’s where things take a turn for the confusing, as it’s not immediately clear how to set up or even access in-game controls. For example, although I was able to get Tomb Raider up and running, I had no idea how to recreate my desktop mouse and keyboard controls. And for the moment, developers RemoteMyApp offer almost zilch in the way of documentation.

With some fiddling, however (starting with tapping the magic-wand icon to bring up the control-creator options), I was able to produce onscreen WASD and mouse equivalents. And from there I was able to at least move Lara Croft around. Remotr has built-in control profiles for Counter-Strike and Team Fortress, but it would be great if it had a whole lot more.

Ultimately, I can’t see myself playing games this way, as the controls — even once they were mapped correctly — would feel like a constant struggle. And there are so many great Android-native games, and even Android ports of desktop games, that for the most part I don’t see the point.

That said, Remotr does work as advertised, and in Tomb Raider, at least, the action was surprisingly smooth. If you have even a passing interest in playing desktop games on your phone or tablet, there’s certainly no downside to giving Remotr a try.

Samsung: Demand for Galaxy S6 steeper than expected

Samsung is having trouble meeting the heavy demand for its Galaxy S6 phones.
CNET

Samsung is likely to bump into trouble meeting demand for its Galaxy S6 lineup.

The Korean mobile phone maker said Wednesday that demand for its Galaxy S6 lineup is “much higher” than initially planned for, Reuters has reported. The Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge both went on sale last Friday. Though Samsung hasn’t released any sales figures for the opening weekend, the two phones had already snagged around 20 million preorders over the past few weeks, according to the Korea Times.

“The two new phones are drawing impressive responses,” a source told the Korea Times. “Samsung aims to ship 10 million S6s and S6 Edges in 26 days after the devices’ global launch. That target is achievable.”

If true, that would be a much faster pace than achieved by previous Galaxy S models.

The reason for Samsung’s short supply? Samsung mobile chief JK Shin acknowledged a shortage in supply for the Galaxy S6 Edge. Last week, he told reporters that the company won’t be able to keep up with demand for the Edge over the near term because the model’s screens, which curve onto one of the phone’s long sides, are more difficult to manufacture, Reuters noted. Still, Samsung is striving to meet global demand for its new phones over the longer haul. “Although there may be some difficulties for the short term, we will do our utmost to secure enough supply for our global consumers,” Samsung told Reuters.

Samsung has a lot riding on the Galaxy S6 line. The company has seen its fortunes in the smartphone market take a decided downturn over the past year as it has faced increasing competition on the low end from vendors such as Xiaomi and Huawei and on the high end from Apple. The new big-screened iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus helped Apple steal the smartphone crown from Samsung during last year’s final quarter, according to research firm Gartner.

With the Galaxy S6, Samsung seems to have paid heed to customer’s complaints — and to the lackluster reception for the previous model, the Galaxy S5. It moved from a plastic phone body to a more upscale metal chassis, and it also shifted to a less “bloated,” less cluttered variation of Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system. The Edge model, too, brings in an extra bit of design flair.

CNET reviewer Jessica Dolcourt said this: “Worldly looks and top-notch specs make the impressive, metal Samsung Galaxy S6 the Android phone to beat for 2015.”

But that won’t help with the part of the year that’s already gone by.

Last week, Samsung said it expects its earnings to fall once again for the just-completed first quarter of 2015 as it negotiates the rough currents of the smartphone market. It estimates that its operating profit for the January-March period will be 5.9 trillion won ($5.4 billion), down 30 percent from the year-ago period, and that sales likely will come int at about 47 trillion won, a decrease of about 12 percent year over year.

Samsung did not respond to CNET’s request for comment.

Samsung Galaxy S6 proves tough to take apart — iFixit

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 is a tough nut to crack.
Josh Miller/CNET

Should you ever feel a need to explore the innards of Samsung’s Galaxy S6 smartphone, you’ll be better off resisting that urge.

The Galaxy S6, which launched Friday, has gotten the teardown treatment from iFixit, which sells repair parts and offers free online repair guides to electronic devices.

Its verdict, released Tuesday: four out of 10 for repairability, due in part to the difficulty in simply taking off the back. (A 10 is the best rating, by the way.)

Such teardowns are designed to reveal the degree of difficulty tied to a repair. They also provide insight into how a device is assembled and what parts are used.

Over the past year Samsung has faced a rough time in the smartphone arena. Challenged by competition from low-end vendors such as Xiaomi and Huawei and high-end vendors such as Apple, the company’s sales and market share have suffered. As such, Samsung is relying heavily on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge to reinvigorate consumer excitement and demand for its flagship phones.

Based on specs, the S6 certainly looks better than the S5, according to iFixit. The S6 sports a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 2,560×1,440 pixels. Powered by an Exynos 7 Octa 7420 processor, the phone also comes with a 16 megapixel rear camera, built-in wireless charging, a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 backing and on-board storage options of 32GB, 64GB or 128GB.

But simply opening the Galaxy S6 was tricky for the iFixit folks. Peeling off all the adhesive and unscrewing all the screws finally removes the back of the phone. Checking out the internals, iFixit finds them to be a “dead ringer” for the ones used in the Galaxy S6 Edge.

Removing the S6’s battery is easier than doing so on the S6 Edge but tougher than it was on previous phones, such as the Galaxy S5. After checking out the various components on the motherboard, including the processor, the iFixit team removed the daughterboard to discover the audio jack, microUSB port and another part that’s likely either the touch or fingerprint sensor controller.

The final verdict? The Galaxy S6 merits a repairability score of four out of 10. In awarding such a low score, iFixit cites several factors. The display needs to be removed if you want to replace the USB port. The battery can be removed without taking out the motherboard, but you’d face the challenge of tough adhesive and a glued-on rear panel. Finally, replacing the glass without destroying the display is “probably impossible.”

On the bright side, at least, the S6 fared slightly better than its Galaxy S6 Edge counterpart, which earned a repairability score of three out of 10 from iFixit.

Samsung did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for comment.

Wait… is the iPod not dead after all?

The iPod was the original iPhone, blazing a trail of technological innovation that left other manufacturers scrambling in its wake. Since the arrival of the smartphone, though, it’s been left to gather dust in the corner.

That could be about to change according to sources speaking to AppleInsider. Reports suggest that Apple is ready to update the portable music (and movie) players later this year.

It’s a rumour that makes sense, with Apple said to be plotting a facelift for its music offerings after last year’s purchase of Beats. Will the new iPods come with a new streaming service front and centre? We’ll have to wait and see.

High-fidelity listening

Another possibility is that Apple is considering an ultra-high-resolution audio player, since Tidal arrived to push the bit-rate bar up. Casual listeners could stick with the iPhone, but audiophiles might want to pay extra for a premium iPod experience through a higher-tier Beats streaming service.

Unfortunately, AppleInsider’s sources don’t have too much to say on what this next generation iPod could look like. A 4-inch screen size looks probable, plus internal components from older iPhones, while the integrated storage is in line for a boost too.

Would you welcome this iconic gadget back into the fold? Or has its moment well and truly passed? Sadly it doesn’t look like we’ll ever get the clickwheel back, but we can dream.
