Buying Guide: TR Top 10: Best GoPro and Action cameras

Action cameras are unlike any other kind of camera. They’re designed to be attached to helmets, surfboards, cars and other objects, not hand held.

Typically, they’re small, tough and simple, with a lens on the front that captures the world in a fish-eye perspective. Their small size and dramatic POV (‘point of view’) footage has made them popular with extreme sports personalities who capture their adventures by attaching cameras to themselves or their equipment.

They’re also used by TV production companies where using a regular video camera would be impossible. GoPro to is the market leader with its iconic box-shaped Hero cameras, but action cams also come in a ‘bullet’ style, like the iON Air Pro.

Don’t just buy on brand. Think about how and what you want from an action camera. If you’re helmet mounting, then a bullet cam will probably be the best choice. For a chest mount a box design will be more stable. And when it comes to features, do you really need Wi-Fi, 4K, GPS or even a screen?

We round up ten of the best action cams to compare their features and their uses.

gopro

1. GoPro Hero4 Black

4K video from the biggest name in the action camera market

Price: around £290
Buy: GoPro.com | Jessops

The GoPro Hero4 Black is the companies flagship model, featuring a wealth of video options and accessories that help to ensure the model and brands popularity. These options enable 4K or slow motion full HD video at 120fps along side more standard 1080p full HD options. This makes it a great choice for professional videographers as well as home users who want flexibility over the video quality and resolution settings. If however you just want a camera that captures the action then the the GoPro Hero4 Black may just be overkill.

garmin

2. Garmin VIRB Elite

Record your GPS location as well as the action

Price: around £210
Buy: Garmin | Evans Cycles

The VIRB shows Garmin’s GPS expertise, incorporating tracking technology seamlessly, so you can not only record the action but also your location. The camera is well designed with a simple slide switch to start and stop recording. The Garmin arrives with a GoPro mount adapter so can easy be used with any of the GoPro accessories. The whole package has been incredibly well thought out with software support from the VIRB Elite App for iOS and android along with editing software for Mac and PC.

drift

3. Drift Ghost-S

Recommended for high impact sports

Price: around £329
Buy: WEX Photographic | Amazon

A heavyweight in the action camera market the Ghost-S looks and feels like it has been designed to withstand a warzone. A sturdy mount design enables the camera to be attached flush rather than sitting proud like other designs which is a huge advantage. A small screen and Wi-Fi connectivity are an added bonus, but what really appeals is the straightforward, without fuss operation. The Ghost-S doesn’t bother with 4K or GPS. It has been designed solely to capture the action and withstand the crashes.

sony

4. Sony AZ1 VR

Compact action camera with live view wrist remote

Price: around £260
Buy: Amazon | John Lewis | Jessops

Sony’s action camera does away with the screen on the body and instead gives you a handy wrist remote with liveView, this is useful when your camera is mounted in a place that is difficult to reach, or you are unable to see such as on a helmet. This gives you far greater control than the average two to three button remotes from other manufacturers, enabling you to have complete control over the operation and settings as well as see what it is you’re recording. The waterproof case and small size make this action camera extremely versatile and the quality of the footage is excellent.

5. iON Air Pro 3

Vibration alerts and simple slide switch operation

Price: around £279
Buy: WEX Photographic | Snow & Rock |

The bullet cam style of the iON Air Pro 3 makes it popular with motor sports and cyclists who don’t want a camera that stands sticks out or protrudes from their vehicles. The no fuss solid design with slide switch to activate makes this a great get out and go camera. Vibrations along with leds indicate when recording starts and stops, so you always know where you are without visually checking the status.

muvi

6. Muvi K-Series K2NPNG

Comprehensive package containing everything you need

Price: around £239
Buy: Calphoto | Ordnance Survey

Veho has put a great deal of effort into making sure that their Muvi range of action cameras is a major contender in this competitive market. The box design and wealth of mounts included in the box is a great move. Looks and build show that it is built to withstand the action and an ultra tough dive case quotes a maximum depth of 100m, far greater than we’re able to test.

rollei

7. Rollei Actioncam 400

Feature packed and great value for money

Price: around £97
Buy: Amazon

Following the tried and tested box design the Rollei packs in good all round performance at a very reasonable price. The removable case is styled along the same design as GoPro’s dive case and features the same mount design, this means that if in the unlikely situation one of the supplied mounts won’t do, you can make use of any GoPro mount. You get a 2 inch screen and Wi-Fi, which makes this a good first choice camera.’

ivue

8. iVue Horizon

Sunglasses with integrated action camera at a great price

Price: around £125
Buy: Bambuzo

The iVue Horizon is a perfectly good pair of glasses with swappable polarised or clear lenses depending on your needs. They also feature a built in action camera that gives a true point of view perspective on the action. Recording options and control over the settings are limited with just a single button mounted on the side to control the operation. However this simplicity has a great deal going for it, especially when all you want to do is get on with the activity rather than worry about mounts and settings.

panasonic

9. Panasonic HX-500E

Unique design best for head mounting

Price: around £319
Buy: Amazon | WEX Photographic |

Panasonic have taken a different design approach to the main swathe of action cameras by splitting the device in two, the camera and main unit. The two sections are connected by a cable which means that you need to find two different ways to fix the camera to your person or vehicle. However video quality is excellent with options to shoot 4K as well as HD formats. NFC, screen and Wi-Fi are all welcome features.

htc

10. HTC Re

Simplicity itself with this crossover between action and lifestyle camera

Price: around £124
Buy: Amazon

The RE is a great concept with action camera style and design, but rather than being made for the extreme sports enthusiast it’s made for the everyday. The always on state means the RE is always ready to capture the action, primed and ready without waiting for it to power up like other cameras. Unfortunately image and video quality is really no better than most smart phones.

The Apple Watch and wearables revolution: a boon or danger to your business?

With the imminent arrival of the Apple Watch and several manufacturers outing their devices based on rival Google’s Android Wear, you would think that it wouldn’t be too much longer before we are all sporting a smart device on our wrists.

But GlobalWebIndex’s Q4 Device report found that as yet only one in ten internet users aged 16-64 own a smartwatch, with 7% owning a smart wristband. However, those who say they have responsibility for purchasing IT products for their companies (17% of internet users) post much higher figures – one fifth have a smartwatch and 16% a smart wristband, suggesting these wearables enthusiasts may act as advocates within their businesses.

Recent research by ABI Research has found that over the next five years, 13 million wearable devices embedded with wireless connectivity will be integrated into wellness plans offered by businesses.

The figures suggest a beachhead is to be found inside the business. But along with tablets, smartphones and the explosion of Bring Your Own Device, will the latest smartwatch trend be a help or a hindrance to businesses, and what role can IT expect to play in implementing and supporting a smartwatch strategy within the organisation?

Watching what goes on in business

Bringing things back to basics – what role could wearables play within the business?

“Wearables, particularly in the fitness space, can give companies an easy, compelling way to promote healthy behaviours, get employees more active, and to potentially reduce the cost of care for employees,” says Gareth Jones, EMEA vice president at Fitbit.

Clare Flynn Levy, founder and CEO of Essentia Analytics, says that wearables, among other data sources, could help professional investors understand how they can optimise their investment decision-making.

“We’re particularly interested in how sleep and stress levels impact trading behaviour,” she says. “We can take as much or as little information as a person or company is willing to provide, and with this data show the wearer if he or she makes better investment decisions after exercise or after a good night’s sleep.”

“If you knew you’d make 20% more money by going to bed an hour earlier each night, you probably would. Wearable technology has the potential to unlock this user-specific information and help us to work more efficiently and maximise our return on energy expended,” she adds.

Levy predicts that in the near future we’ll see wearables used more and more in everyday life, and this will impact the workplace, whether employers are ready for it or not. “The shrewd move is to be flexible: embrace the change and let employees bring in the technology they think will help them work better and smarter.”

WearablesHealth data could be a potential minefield

Problems ahead

But John Culkin, director of Information Management at Crown Records Management, sees problems with health tracking and the data it collects.

“What if that data fell into the wrong hands? Information about how your heartbeat changes in reaction to an event could be sensitive. Perhaps, too, a politician or celebrity’s health information would be of interest to those wishing to publish it, or even to a blackmailer,” he says.

He says that all these devices – and the data they produce – would have to be controlled, deleted and even destroyed effectively to make it completely safe within the work environment.

Culkin says wearable technology could allow organisations to track staff and ensure they are where they should be – perhaps through beacon technology or through checking which Wi-Fi router they are connected to. “This has significant implications for data security and for personal freedoms too,” he notes.

Putting a strategy in place

With that in mind, what can the IT organisation do to help deliver a practical wearables strategy in the workplace?

Updated: Apple Watch release date, price and features

Apple Watch launches on Friday, April 24 – you can set your friend’s inferior Android Wear smartwatch to that release date – and we finally know everything about what’s been hiding up Tim Cook’s sleeve.

It’s an iPhone-compatible smartwatch officially dubbed Apple Watch, shedding the fabled iWatch moniker, as the company is focusing on its first chic wearable over geeky tech.

To that lavish point, when pre-orders begin on April 10, the price will range from $350 (£299, AU$499) for the entry-level Sport model to $17,000 (£13,500, AU$24,000) for the top-tier 18-karat gold editions.

You can read emails, summon Siri, receive calls and track fitness goals on your watch. Facebook alerts, WeChat messages and Twitter trends can also be beamed your wrist without pulling out your smartphone.

But is this really the first smartwatch that matters, like Cook says? Does its 18-hour battery life hold up? Is it water resistant? We finally have those answers one month out from the Apple Watch launch.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? An iOS 8.2-friendly watch that plays nice with your iPhone
  • When is it out? April 24. Pre-orders begin on April 10
  • What will it cost? $350 (£299, AU$499) to $17,000 (£13,500, AU$24,000)

Apple Watch release date

The countdown is on for the Apple Watch release date, which has officially been set for April 24 in select countries. Pre-orders begin April 10, the same day you can try it on at the Apple Store.

Apple Watch appsApple Watch is officially launching on April 24 in nine countries

It’ll be available in nine countries on the final Friday for April, jiving with our Apple-always-launches-on-Fridays prediction from earlier this month.

Apple Watch will launch in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong and Japan, with more countries due to get the Apple Watch at later date. Tim Cook promised. That’s good news because everyone we talked to at MWC 2015 in Spain was eager to get their hands on the watch.

Apple Watch price

We finally have an answer to the question: “How much will the Apple Watch cost?” The answer: More than we were hoping to pay in some cases.

Apple Watch release date and priceThree models with very different pricing depending on your taste, budget

Only the aluminum Sport edition “starts at $349 (£299)” and that’s for the smaller 38mm version. The 42mm size is slightly more at $399 (£339), revealed the Apple CEO this week.

The glossier stainless steel “Watch” collection starts at $549 (£479) and goes up to to $1099 (£949), depending on the Apple Watch size and band configuration.

The gold Watch Edition will be in limited supply at Apple Stores and cost a whopping $10,000 (£8,000) to $17,000 (£13,500, AU$24,000), confirming prior rumors that said it’d be incredibly expensive.

Apple Watch release date, price and features

Why Apple Watch costs so much?

It’s not just the notorious Apple tax pushing the price tag well beyond $349, it’s the components involved. For example, the all-metal Link Bracelet has 100 components and takes an insane nine hours to cut.

Apple also recruited high-profile people throughout the watch and biometrics industries who have wound up on its Apple Watch team. That talent comes at a price.

Then there’s a hidden cost. While a subsidized iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are cheaper upfront in the US, stores make up the difference with contract kickbacks. Not so with a smartwatch. Stores need a cut too.

For the sake of comparison, Android Wear’s initial watches were the Samsung Gear Live at $200 (£170, AU$250) and LG G Watch at $230 (£160, AU$250). The more stylish Moto 360 is priced at $249 (£199, AU$329) and LG Watch Urbane is set to be even more expensive.

Apple is clearly aiming for luxury given the sapphire glass-protected display, an imposing digital crown, two sizes and even the 18k gold edition.

What does Apple Watch actually do?

Apple’s first wearable gadget beams messages, Facebook updates and simplified apps to our wrists, eliminating the all-too-common need to take out our devices to constantly check notifications.

There are more than a dozen ways to interact with the watch, from receiving glanceable notifications, to feeling “taptic” feedback, to calling upon Siri, according to the developers’ WatchKit software.

Apple Watch can also work without an iPhone for select apps, including Apple Pay, Passbook flight check-ins, listening to music during a run and tracking fitness metrics. Oh, and for telling the time accurately too.

The 8GB of storage with some restrictions limit the amount of photos and music that can be stored directly on the smartwatch, but it’s still double the space of 4GB Android Wear watches, and most content streams from the iPhone.

It’s going to become especially convenient to pocket the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and even bigger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus in your jeans, or to always stow the thin, but still 9.7-inch iPad Air 2 in a bag.

Is that phone call from a telemarketer not worth your time or an emergency from a loved one? Apple Watch makes mundane notifications easy to dismiss while keeping you in the loop with important alerts.

In Depth: Black Friday and the deals that broke the internet

Did you pick up any amazing Black Friday deals? I got a watch I’d fancied for ages and a TV I didn’t think I could afford.

If you’re wondering what the blimmin’ heck I’m on about, then you might just have missed some brilliant bargains.

I’m talking about Black Friday, which has gone from a weird thing Americans do to one of the most important bits of the tech fan’s calendar.

Black Friday is the day after the US Thanksgiving holiday, and it’s when retailers start slashing prices to kick-start the festive shopping season.

It’s famous for the so-called “doorbuster” deals, amazing and amazingly limited special offers that just happen to cause outbreaks of fisticuffs in front of news cameras, which in turn make the viewing public think that that particular retailer must be bargain central. Funny how that happens, eh?

There’s a second day, Cyber Monday. That’s the Monday following Black Friday, and it’s supposedly the day when everybody goes “aaaagh! It’s December! Must buy presents!”

Many retailers offer Cyber Monday deals now, although they tend to be more modest than Black Friday ones and fewer people get into fights. Next up? Boxing Day sales!

How Black Friday hit big in the UK

In a few short years the British have gone from mocking Black Friday to getting rather excited about it.

Barclaycard reports that this year’s Black Friday was the highest spending day on record, with online sales up 37.5% compared to last year.

John Lewis reported that sales were up 56.8% week on week and 21.8% year on year, with the firm shifting an impressive £179.1 million in a single week.

WorldPay says the number of transactions was up 124% while Visa Europe reported spending rising by 1.6%. The New West End Company, which represents businesses on London’s Oxford Street, Regent Street and New Bond Street, expected £220 million to be spent in those three streets alone in one day.

The overall picture is the happiest the high street, virtually and in the real world, has been for some time.

And the online numbers are particularly impressive when you consider that the moment Black Friday began, many retailers’ websites fell over like a Victorian gentlewoman confronted by a flasher.

Some sites’ “we’re too busy! Queue now!” pages looked a little suspicious – so for example disabling JavaScript on the Currys website bypassed the traffic wardens and took you to a very smooth and quick-running website, which was very interesting.

But stores like Game were genuinely offline as angry execs no doubt threatened to take the web teams’ Nerf guns and amusing desk ornaments if they didn’t get the site back online, stat.

In the US, HP and Best Buy went down; in the UK people found themselves unable to access Argos, Tesco and Boots.

If only there was some way of predicting when demand was likely to be quite high, such as LOOKING AT YOUR OWN SODDING ADVERTS. Ahem.

Were there really Black Friday bargains?

Yes, there were. Our teams of highly trained bargain finders tracked some really good deals on laptops and routers, TVs and Hi-Fis, Chromecasts and consoles and Kindle Paperwhites and Apple iPads.

Some deals were too good to be true – a quick price check of some (but not all) of Amazon’s lightning deals showed that some rivals’ un-discounted prices were awfully close to Amazon’s discounted ones – but others, such as 60% off fine technology magazines, were genuinely good.

And as we may have already mentioned, your correspondent got a big telly.

What’s in it for retailers?

They get to shift old stock to make room for new things, and many of us buy more than just the bargain – so for example you might buy a flat-screen TV, remember that every single one of them sounds like it’s been thrown down a well, and shell out for a soundbar too; or you might buy a set of Beats headphones and a funny little hat to put on top of them.

Cross-selling isn’t the only way retailers make money: in some cases, what the shops lose by slashing their profit margins is more than compensated for by selling the items in large volumes.

What’s in it for me?

Cheap things! UK retailers aren’t quite as mad as the US ones – even the biggest doorbusters were fairly modest deals on things such as Polaroid TVs when US shoppers were getting 300% off Mac Pros and helicopters and guns and stuff.

But discounts are discounts, and if you got a good deal and you also used a cashback debit or credit card and signed up for a cashback website and applied a voucher code the retailer probably owes you money now, or at least a hug.

What should I do for Black Friday next year?

Homework. We’d recommend bookmarking a smart, sassy, thoroughly independent tech website – hello! – and finding a great source of deals worth looking at – hello again! – so that you don’t waste time on pointless offers.

This page right here will be the place to come for all the best bargains on all the best products.

And we’d suggest a shopping list, not of specific model numbers (the likelihood of the GargleBargle BHS21212/EGH3/B2-E42 just happening to come with a 70% discount is pretty slim) but of brands and broad product categories.

If you know the going rate for a 50-inch Samsung LED TV, you’ll know whether £100 off the one you’re looking at is a good deal or just the going rate; similarly if you know that the iPad you’re looking at is the latest one, you’ll know that even £30 off is pretty good going.

When is Black Friday?

In 2015, Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November. That gives you plenty of time to start saving, or to learn martial arts if you fancy your chances down the local ASDA at midnight.
